An introduction to pharmacogenomics, a scientific discipline that combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person's genetic makeup. In this course, we will review key pharmacogenomic concepts, examples, and implementation challenges. Resources for pharmacogenomic research will be presented, and implementation and regulatory issues will be discussed.
The material is organized in five modules. The first module addresses the question "How does genetic information impact drug response in humans?" Module 2 focuses on key concepts in human genomics that are of relevance to pharmacogenomics. The third module reviews key pharmacology concepts and examples. Module 4 is devoted to some of the methods for establishing pharmacogenomics associations. Module 5 and 6 present several pharmacogenomics examples and discuss opportunities and issues for implementing pharmacogenomics in the clinic.
